Irish Cement Workers Vote To Accept Proposals Ending Dispute

Irish Cement workers voted yesterday to accept proposals agreed between the company and worker representatives which provide for an equitable conclusion to the dispute at Irish Cement Ltd production plants in Castlemungret, Co. Limerick and Platin, Co. Meath.

SIPTU Organiser, Karan O'Loughlin, said: "The workers have voted by a large majority to accept the proposals agreed between worker representatives and the company following a mediation process overseen by an independent chairman.


"The implementation of these proposals will result in the workers being paid the monies which the company owes them. The workers will return to work on Monday (21st May) and pickets at the plants have been lifted with immediate effect."

Karen O'Loughlin added: "The efficient and professional manner in which the mediation talks were overseen by Joe McDermott, in his role as an independent chairman, was pivotal in resolving this dispute. The agreement, which contains procedural commitments on future engagements between the company and worker representatives, will be registered with the Labour Court."

Pickets were placed on the entrances to Irish Cement Ltd plants on 3rd April following a decision to take industrial action by the Irish Cement Group of Unions which includes SIPTU, TEEU and Unite.
