€2.2m For Local Flood Relief

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport and local TD Leo Varadkar has welcomed confirmation that €2.2 million is being spent on flood relief works in the Dublin 15 and Swords areas.

This includes flood relief schemes Swords and Rowlestown, as well as the new bridge currently under construction in Mulhuddart.

The new bridge is being provided in Mulhuddart as part of the main River Tolka scheme under a €2 million project. This is the last section of the River Tolka Flood Relief Scheme and is at an advanced stage. The old bridge will be removed when the new bridge has been completed.

A flood defence embankment is being constructed at Rowlestown, along the left bank of the Broadmeadow tributary. This particular scheme has been allocated €153,000.

And €54,000 in funding has been allocated to increase widen the Gaybrook Stream in Aspen at Swords along a 200 metre stretch.

Meanwhile, a separate scheme involving Fingal County Council and Meath County Council is underway. The two councils have acknowledged that the area is at significant risk of flooding, and are conducting a detailed assessment of 19 rivers and streams before deciding what further action should be taken.

Minister Varadkar said: "This funding is welcome and I hope the schemes will make a real difference to people by putting an end to some of the serious flooding we have seen in the past. Even the smallest flood relief can have an enormous impact if it protects people’s property, and prevents the sort of problems we have seen in recent years."
