Athlone Hopes For €1.9 Billion Development

A major development is underway in Athlone with the news of a huge mixed-use development being planned.

Main construction work for Phase 1 is expected to cost in the region of €175 million, with the overall project expected to cost in the region of €1.9 billion and could create around 9,000 jobs.

According to the website, www.unearthore.com, detailed plans were approved by Westmeath County Council to Athlone Business Park Ltd on Friday, December 2, for the construction of a mixed-use development.

The location is Creggan Upper, Bunnahinly & Kilmacuagh (Castlemaine), East of Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

The approved plans of local developers Aidan Kelly and Michael O’Sullivan, directors of Athlone Business Park ltd, include the construction of nine exhibition halls, nine smaller independent exhibition buildings, temporary exhibition space, offices, administrative services, living quarters, hotels, shops, restaurants, pubs, a school and a train station.

Construction of the 102,348 square metres gross floor area on a site of 31.6 ha, will be located in the townlands of Creggan Upper and will be principally accessed from the N62 (Former N6) with secondary access via Athlone Business Park.
