Dublin Crematorium Plans Rejected

There's news this week that a proposed new crematorium and cemetery in Co Dublin has been refused planning permission.

Fingal Council rejected the planned development at Balleally West, Lusk on the grounds that it is a 'High Amenity' zone.

They said the subject site, the proposed design, the scale and regimented layout of the proposed development, particularly the cemetery element, and lack of high quality landscaping proposed, the development as proposed would result in a cramped form of development which fails to provide an appropriate setting for the proposed crematorium and cemetery.


According to the website, unearthore.com, it is considered that the proposed development would be visually obtrusive and seriously injure the amenities of the area, and, as such, would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.

Had it gone through, the development would have consisted of a crematorium (606 square metres) with a single cremation unit, and separate maintenance store (64 square metres).

The cemetery itself was set to comprise 1,230 graves and provision for 115 car parking spaces including internal access roads, landscaping, boundary treatments, waste water treatment plant, and associated infrastructure and site development works.

There's disappointment for the project team, including the architect, Bell Associates and the promoter Carol Williams who submitted plans in January.
