The €1.1m project will regenerate the town’s historical shopping area which has been affected by the emergence of large retail facilities in recent years.
In October the town council was given confirmation that its application for €700,000 from the Border Midlands Wet (BMW) assembly in European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) had been successful. In December, the council also made provision for an additional €400,000 to enhance the BMW funding.

The works will include the implementation of a parking strategy incorporating an electronic parking guidance information system, the installation of an intelligent traffic signal along the Upper Main Street to optimise vehicular/pedestrian movements and the enhancement of pedestrian linkages between off-street parking areas to the Main Street.
The funding will also enable the introduction of quality-shared space along Upper Main Street including refurbishment of footpaths, provision of pedestrian crossings, provision of decorative street furniture and landscaping.
