£5.7m Armagh Revamp Complete

Streets in and around Armagh city centre have undergone a major transformation.

Over £5.7m has been spent revamping the area as part of a government-led regeneration project.

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie said she hoped the investment would stimulate further developments in the historic cathedral city.

The minister paid tribute to the city council, Armagh City Centre Management, Roads Service and the contractor, SIAC Construction Ltd.

"The works have been delivered ahead of schedule and just in time for the anticipated Christmas shopping period," she said.

Armagh Mayor, Thomas O’Hanlon, said the project has been a priority for council officials over the last five years.

"This project is the result of many years of working with our private sector partners in Armagh City Centre Management to secure funding, agree the design and finally the construction of the scheme," he said.

Over 30 local businesses have also availed of shop frontage grants to update their premises.

Public art schemes linked to the streetscaping project are expected to be installed soon.

Kieran Doyle, Regional Director for SIAC Construction Ltd, said the project was completed several months early and within budget.

He said this "is a measure of SIAC's commitment to the project and Armagh City Council".

"SIAC achieved this by adopting a partnering approach with the council, its professional advisors and indeed the people of Armagh. SIAC would like to thank all parties including businesses, residents and the general public for their co-operation," added Mr Doyle.
