Departments Converge For Flooding Summit

Further emergency flooding talks were held by Ireland's government departments yesterday.

The Emergency Response Coordination Committee met in The National Emergency Co-Ordination Centre to assess the ongoing problem.

Committee representation included the Department of Environment, the Taoiseach, Office of Public Works officials, Transport Department, defence advisers, the Department of Justice, the Department of Health, Rural Affairs Department and Met Éireann.

Widespread flooding is still being experienced throughout the country with areas in the west and south still badly affected.

There has been some improvement in the south as flood levels have subsided slightly.

Areas in the Lower Shannon region are under high flood alert as the river Shannon is very swollen.

Local authorities are coordinating efforts in the region assisted by the Defence Forces and the various agencies.

Overnight, Athlone's Barrow River burst its banks and Kildare County Council has requested the assistance of the Defence Forces to provide sand bags and personnel.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) is the State’s lead agency on flooding.

Minister Martin Mansergh has recommended all households in high risk areas to follow the advice set out in the OPW Brochures 'Making a Home Flood Resistant' and 'Flooding Plan, Prepare, Protect'.

Flooded urban areas may contain many hazards including submerged open manholes and downed power lines.

Householders should keep shores and drains around their own homes cleared and should also consider moving valuables, electrical equipment and furniture upstairs.
