April Opening For Revamped Arts Centre

Belfast's refurbished Crescent Arts Centre will opens its doors to the public in April, it has been confirmed.

The £7.2m restoration project at the listed Victorian complex began in September 2008.

Works undertaken at the arts centre include the creation of new state-of-the-art dance studios, performance spaces and photography studios.

The Department of Culture Arts and Leisure has contributed £4.5m towards the scheme, in addition to funding from the Arts Council for Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Heritage Lottery Fund and the Crescent Arts Centre itself.

David Hill, Crescent Chairman, welcomed news that the centre is on schedule to re-open within budget and on time in less than six months.

"This project represents a major investment in the artistic and cultural life of Northern Ireland and will ensure that we continue to provide future generations from across all communities and of all abilities with the opportunity to learn and experience the arts using tailor-made facilities," he said.

"At 2,052 square metres, these significant renovations will double useable space at the Crescent, which, as a landmark city building is being carefully restored to its former glory."

The refurbishment of the Crescent Arts Centre will represent one of the biggest capital investments in the Arts in Northern Ireland in 2010.

Lorraine McDowell, Director of Operations, Arts Council of Northern Ireland said £1.45m of funding was provided by the National Lottery.

"This major investment will protect, strengthen and develop not only the building, but also Northern Ireland’s arts infrastructure. I am pleased that the construction of the venue is progressing well and remains on time and on budget," said Ms McDowell.
