City council officials said the small strip was acquired to ease traffic using the junction.
Work at the Wellpark Road has already commenced, after the council ruled the new lanes should be operational by Christmas.
The works will provide an additional two lanes of traffic for 60 metres in advance of the junction.

Galway officials said they expect time-savings for motorists travelling inbound on the Wellpark Road at busy periods.
The scheme will also involve the relocating of the current bus shelter 75-metres east of its current position on the Wellpark Road.
Wellpark Road will remain open to traffic for the duration of the three week project, though motorists may experience minor delays due to the carriageway narrowing required to complete the works.
Galway City Council said it will aim to minimise disruption to traffic while the work is being completed.
Pedestrians have been advised that the footpath along Wellpark Road adjacent to the Wellpark Retail Centre will be closed for the duration of this project. They are therefore requested to use the footpath on the opposite side of the road.
