About Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)

Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)
As an Industry Training Board and Sector Skills Council our role is to encourage the adequate training of those employed or intending to be employed in the construction industry and to improve the skills and productivity of the industry in Northern Ireland. We provide advice, courses and grants for training to help construction companies improve their skills to increase their competitive edge.

Careers
It’s all about working together. Choose a career in construction and you won’t be starting out on your own. You’ll be joining a team of specialist people all working together to build a strong, long-lasting future.

Whatever your role is in the industry, if it’s as a bricklayer or plasterer, civil engineer, architect or construction manager, every team member is as important as the next. So whether your talent is working with your head or hands, you can be sure there’s a career in construction for you.

This page has been produced to give you an insight into the huge range of careers the construction industry has to offer. It gives you an idea of what each job is like and what skills you’ll need to succeed.

Skill Build NI
Skillbuild NI is held annually each spring, with the top local construction apprentices competing to win coveted titles in 12 different construction craft areas ranging from brickwork to wall and floor tiling. The winners may then go on to represent Northern Ireland in the UK Skillbuild Finals and potentially the UK at WorldSkills.

Courses
Training is not only important, it’s essential for future growth in the industry. Properly trained employees and subcontractors are safer, work faster, stay motivated and make fewer mistakes. They are also easier to recruit and retain. Training leads to qualifications like NVQ's and CSR and registered cards.

Not only do they prove to you and your clients that your workers are competent professionals but with more and more clients and contractors insisting on a fully qualified workforce they're becoming essential to get on site at all. The CITB-ConstructionSkills NI Training Grant Scheme offers support to a wide range of training and qualifications from apprentices through to the existing workforce including management and administration.

Grants
As an Industry Training Board our role is to encourage and increase training and skills in Northern Ireland. We are committed to continuing to review and develop our Grants and services. CITB-ConstructionSkills Noffers grants to support a wide range of training and qualifications.

Whether you’re training new recruits, developing established staff or looking for improvements in other areas of your business, we can offer advice on training and grants to meet your needs. If you are thinking about your training needs for the coming year, contact us so we can help you to get the most out of our Grants Scheme.

Levy
Sharing the investment across the industry helps to maintain a solid skills base, meeting the immediate needs of individual employers and in the long term benefiting the whole industry by helping avoid skill shortages and inflationary pay.

Through legislation CITB-ConstructionSkills Northern Ireland is authorised to raise a levy from the Northern Ireland construction industry to fund its activities and services that aim to encourage adequate training.
