PRODUCTS
Gabions
Maccaferri Gabion is a Double-Twisted “DT” wire mesh container of variable sizes uniformly partitioned into internal cells, interconnected with other similar units and filled with stone at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as mass gravity walls, channel linings, revetments, and weirs for geotechnical, hydraulic and erosion control projects
MacWall
MacWall is a segmental retaining wall combining the aesthetics of a blockwork wall, with the reassurance of geogrid soil reinforcement. The blocks have an attractive split face.
Noise Barriers
Green Reef and Greensonic are new concepts of noise barriers. Both systems support numerous plant species which can suit the particular environment in which the barrier is to be placed.
Terramesh Family
Maccaferri Terramesh® Family includes different facing options to build Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) structures and Reinforced Soil Slopes (RSS). It consists of pre-assembled units of double-twist wire mesh (8×10 type) ready to be assembled when they reach the jobsite. The geogrid reinforcement, fascia and lid are all one continuous panel of mesh, requiring no cuts operations on site.
Terramesh System
Terramesh® System is a modular system used to form a gabion-faced MSE wall. The facing section of the unit is formed by connecting a back panel and diaphragms to the main fascia unit, thus creating the rectangular-shaped cells used for stone confinement. The geogrid reinforcement, fascia and lid are all one continuous panel of mesh.
Green Terramesh
Green Terramesh® is an environmentally friendly modular system used to form vegetated (green) faced soil-reinforced slopes (RSS) and embankments.
Mineral Terramesh
Mineral Terramesh® is a unique and simple-to-install soil reinforcement system with a sloping rock face finish. It is ideal for use where a modern, clean-faced aesthetic is preferred. Mineral Terramesh® components are factory-fitted preassembled units ready for rapid erection on site with a design life of 120 years. The installation is simple with no connection requirement between Geogrid and the assembled unit. The Mineral Terramesh® units do not need any form of external framework due to the heavily galvanised welded mesh panels and bracing struts which hold the face at the correct angle during construction.

OFFICINE MACCAFERRI BETS ON IoT AND ACQUIRES NESA
Through the deal, Officine Maccaferri will be able to complement its product portfolio with Nesa’s cutting-edge technologies developed in the remote intelligent sensor sector, thus reaffirming the Group’s long-standing innovative drive
Bologna, Italy, 28 February 2024 - Officine Maccaferri, a global leader in the field of civil and environmental engineering, today announced it has finalized the closing of the acquisition of a majority stake in Nesa S.r.l. (“Nesa”), a technology-driven company and a leading provider of environmental and industrial monitoring and Early Warning systems. With the acquisition, the Group plans to strengthen the incorporation of intelligent, remote-controlled sensing technologies within its product range and to further enhance its offer of Internet of Things (IoT)-based systems for land and people protection.
Founded in 2004 in Vidor, Treviso, Italy, by engineers Pierluigi Bassetto and Mario Adami, Nesa is a highly specialised company in designing, manufacturing, and installing instruments such as meteorological stations, datalogger systems, as well as wired and wireless environmental monitoring instruments. It works in over 80 countries and has more than 5,500 stations installed worldwide. Nesa stands out for its instruments installed in extreme environments, spanning from providing tsunami monitoring systems in the Indian Ocean to building meteorological stations in the far North of Russia to endure freezing temperatures, to developing a state-of-the-art datalogger for climate monitoring in the Caribbean, thus proving its expertise and flexibility in such unique settings. Following the transaction, the two founding partners will maintain an active role in the company’s management.
By leveraging on Nesa’s technologies, which are perfectly matched with Officine Maccaferri’s existing solutions, the Group seeks to further establish itself as a cutting-edge player in the IoT segment, riding the wave that has been driving infrastructure and construction to become increasingly smarter over the past few years. According to projections contained in the latest Allied Market Research report, the scale of the Internet of Things market in the construction industry will reach USD 44.2 billion by 2031.
In this framework and through the integration of Nesa, Officine Maccaferri aspires to become the pioneer in the infrastructure and large-scale works industry digitization, while strengthening its R&D efforts to develop integrated solutions. The past collaboration between the two players has created HelloMac, an innovative alert system capable of safeguarding communities and infrastructures from geohazards, thanks to its ability to detect events such as land deformations and rockfalls and to send real-time alerts and a warning notification. Therefore, Officine Maccaferri will be able to enhance the development of HelloMac by building on Nesa’s technical know-how.
“The deal marks yet another step in the growth path taken by Officine Maccaferri, which is focusing on increasing its technical expertise to address the pressing challenges of our time in terms of environmental safety,” Sergio Iasi, Chairman of Officine Maccaferri, said. “The high level of technical know-how and the great innovation degree offered by Nesa make it the ideal partner to build synergies with, allowing us to develop new cutting-edge solutions, as well as to integrate existing ones, to increase our products’ competitiveness.”
Pierluigi Bassetto and Mario Adami, founders of Nesa, added: “In our research and development journey, we were looking for a strong partner with the skills and expertise to provide HelloMac technology-based solutions with application visibility in the geotechnical and environmental engineering sector. The interest expressed by a historical player and market leader such as Officine Maccaferri is for us a great source of pride, reflecting the fact that, over the years, our company has established itself as a pioneer in the remote sensor segment. Thanks to the deal, we will pursue our innovation path backed by Maccaferri’s worldwide presence and network.”
Officine Maccaferri was assisted by Gianni & Origoni, acting as legal advisor, while Spada Partners was in charge of the due diligence. Nesa was assisted by the law firm Chiaventone & Associati.

Award-winning reinforced soil bund for business park
Maccaferri designed and manufactured an award-winning reinforced soil bund for the i54 Business Park in Staffordshire.
Project detail
The bund is a 260m long and 6.5m high (max), double-sided reinforced soil structure located on the western boundary of the business park, running parallel to Lawn Lane, Pendeford, South Staffordshire.
The function of the bund was to discharge a planning condition to provide a landscaped screen between the new extension of the i54 Business Park and Pendeford Hall nature reserve and caravan park located on the opposite side of Lawn Lane.
Solution
Geometric constraints meant it was not feasible to construct a bund with shallow slopes to the required height so a double-sided reinforced soil structure was built with Maccaferri Mineral Terramesh and Paragrid reinforcing geogrids.
Site-won sandstone was crushed to meet the requirements of class 1A granular fill and used to construct the reinforced soil structures on either side of a site-won cohesive material core to the bund.
Awards
The reinforced soil bund won the ICE West Midlands Geotechnical Award 2022.
